Frederick B. Staas of Laurel Springs, NJ passed away on February 7, 2024. Age 87. Beloved husband of the late Joan Staas (nee McCaughrean) of 64 years. Devoted father of the late Dennis Staas. Loving father-in-law of Julia Staas. Cherished grandpa of Victoria Staas. Dear brother of Lois Staas. Brother-in-law of Ronald and Peggy McCaughrean, Sandra and the late John McCaughrean, also survived by nieces and nephews.

Born in Philadelphia on 6/22/36 to Frederick and Elizabeth (Rackus) Staas, Fred grew up in South Philadelphia. He was an altar boy at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and graduated from Southeast Catholic High School. While in high school he played on the basketball team. He also enjoyed playing baseball. Following high school he attended Drexel University.

Fred began his career in banking at Philadelphia Savings Fund Society (PSFS). He spent 30 years at PSFS. While there he completed the Graduate School of Savings Bank program of the National Association of Mutual Savings Banks at Brown University. Following his years at PSFS he worked for CoreStates Bank and others where he was Assistant Vice President of Commercial Lending.

Fred was a loving husband to Joan. They enjoyed time together on trips, dinners, and shows. He also wrote poems for her. Fred was a devoted father to Dennis. They enjoyed many activities together including riding dirt bikes and Harley Davidson motorcycles. They worked on cars together and took turns driving the RV on family road trips. Fred was also the best grandpa to Victoria, always there for her from infancy on. He encouraged her in all that she did and was so proud of her accomplishments. To him, she was his sunshine. As a father-in-law to Julia he shared his career experiences and imparted wisdom and was supportive in every way. As a brother Fred was steadfast, reliable, and loving. He enjoyed exchanging puns with Lois and sharing stories of his growing up in South Philly. He especially liked teasing her by introducing her as his older sister. We love Fred dearly and will miss him tremendously.

Special Thanks go out to James Gamble, MD, and the physicians of Virtua's Tatem-Brown Family Practice for their care as well as to the entire medical team involved in Fred's care at Virtua Voorhees and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes.

I loved visiting Fred and Joan. They were such great hosts. Fred loved his cookies ❤️

J John Connor on Feb 11, 2024

My deepest condolences to Julia, Torri, Lois, and the rest of the family.

I have so many fond memories of my interactions with Fred. He was always warm, generous, and a man with a very quick wit. As a brother-in-law to Dennis and Julia, I soon came to see Fred as a bonus father-in-law. He and Joan welcomed us into the family with such grace and love, our family eagerly looked forward to every opportunity we had to visit.

We will certainly miss him until we meet again. May God’s comfort and peace embrace us all.

John Connor
