In Memoriam: Anthony R. Saponare
July 30, 1942 - January 6, 2024
Anthony R. Saponare, a man who lived life to the fullest and touched the hearts of everyone he met, has passed away at the age of 81. Anthony was born on July 30, 1942, and his life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his family, community, and his dedication to the City of Camden.
Anthony was a true man of the people. His outgoing nature and genuine interest in others made him a friend to all, always ready for a chat or a friendly smile. He had a way of making everyone feel special, and his presence lit up any room.
A devoted and committed father, Anthony poured his heart and soul into being a loving father to his children, Laura Damm (Ed) and Joseph Saponare (Tammy). He cherished the bonds he shared with them, providing unconditional support and guidance throughout their lives.
Anthony's dedication to the City of Camden was undeniable. With 42 years of public service in law enforcement, he served as Deputy Chief for the Camden City Police Department, Undersheriff for the Camden County Sheriff's Department, and Chief for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. After retiring, he continued his commitment to public safety by working as a Security Officer at Rutgers University.
Beyond his professional life, Anthony had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed annual skiing trips out West, bicycling, running, walking, kayaking, and boating. His daily morning calisthenics routine, consisting of push-ups and sit-ups, kept him physically fit throughout his life.
Anthony took great pride in his Italian heritage, even tracing his family genealogy back to the 1400's. He immersed himself in Italian culture by taking language lessons and visiting Italy three times to connect with family members. He also had a deep love for the Jersey shore, owning two properties there, and enjoyed trips to casinos and Vermont with his late wife, Rita.
An avid fan of traditional boxing matches, Anthony's favorite boxer was Rocky Marciano. He had a hearty appetite and a love for three square meals a day, even if it wasn't mealtime. He had a special fondness for black coffee, homemade wine, and cheesecake.
But perhaps what brought him the greatest joy in life was spending time with his beloved grandchildren, Kierstin, Erica, and Kacey. Anthony was a hands-on Pop Pop who invested countless hours in their lives, playing in his basement, taking them to Haddon Heights Park and even planting "found money" on the ground for them to discover.
Anthony cherished his friendships and was a regular at Panera, as well as various diners in the South Jersey area, where he met his friends for weekly breakfast and lunch.
Anthony was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita Mary, in 2012. He is survived by his children, Laura and Joseph, his sister Joanne Saponare, his brother-in-law Daniel Barbarito (Michelle), and his cherished grandchildren, Kierstin, Erica and Kacey. He also leaves behind many cousins who will remember him fondly.
Anthony R. Saponare will be remembered for his vibrant personality, love of life, and dedication to his family and community. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. There will be a viewing from 8:30am to 10:15am on January 11, 2024 Thursday at Gardner Funeral Home, Runnemede. Funeral mass 11am at St Joachim Parish, Annunciation Church, Bellmawr. Interment New St Mary's Cemetery.

Anthony was the personification of class. He was serving as an Undersheriff in Camden County when I was elected Sheriff and after meeting him I asked him to stay. I valued his opinion and he served myself and the people in Camden County in an exemplary manner. He was a true professional and when he was offered the post of Chief of County Detectives in the Prosecutor’s Office he had my blessing and support. May he rest in peace.

My sincerest sympathy goes to the Sapinar family. I have many fond memories with Tony when he was with the Camden county prosecutors office and when he served as undersheriff for Sheriff McLaughlin. We shared many war stories and adventures during our chiefs meetings and our many luncheons. Tony was a stand up guy, good friend and a real “ cops cop”. Rest in peace my friend.
