My deepest sympathy for an amazing family. Mr Murphy will remain in my memories as a wise, calm, logical man who spread nothing but positivity and goodness. I love how he loved. Rest In Peace Mr Murphy.

W W. C. Geitz, LT, USN (Ret.) on Oct 3, 2020

Coach Murphy was the ultimate leader. Leading by example and from the front, he taught us that if one worked hard enough they could achieve their dreams and be ready to face life's challenges. I was lousy at football, but by employing his leadership traits and thirst for hard work I was able to succeed in my goals through life. Coach, thank you and bless you for all your achievements and those that were better people because of your influence and guidance. God bless and rest in peace.

Joe Murphy is a Lenoir-Rhyne Legend. Often consider one of the best linebackers in school history. A great supporter of the University and loved by all his friends and teammates. Rest in Peace, "Bear" Joe.

My deepest sympathies to all the members of the Coach Murphy. On behalf of the entire 1968 Oakcrest High School Football team we want to extend our condolences to the family. There is no better man and person than Coach Murphy. He took a group of 100 young men from a 2 and 7 year in 1967 to an undefeated team in 1968 and ranked 2nd in the state of NJ. That was no easy task for a group four school. Thanks Coach, you will be remembered and missed more than you know, thank you!!!

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Murphy children and grandchildren. Joe was like an extended part of our family and had such a close relationship with my deceased husband George. Every Sunday morning they had coffee and pastries to share the week's events. They coached together at Lafayette and Penn. Joe had such a special way about him that always made people feel important. On our trips to Russia he always had ingenious ways to cope with the different environment. Throughout our many conversations he always talked about his wonderful wife Gerry and beamed with pride when talking about his children and grandchildren.
He was an outstanding individual and a great friend. He will sadly be missed. Love to the Murphy family! Kay Azar

Joe was the leader of our class of 1954 Gloucester Catholic high school. I was a classmate who benefited from his friendship. Joe was a positive upbeat person who was a great conversationalist with a pleasant smile. I believe he is looking down at us with that same demeanor. Tom Citro

I am so sorry to hear this. I saw him all the time at LA Fitness. He knew my father and that I went to Gloucester Catholic. He always had a smile on his face and was so friendly. He loved to play racketball, use the ab machine and socialize with everyone.
He spoke about his family and grandkids and sports of theirs’ he attended. He was very proud. My deepest condolences.

As my grandfather Henry, Joe's uncle would say - "Class" Joe was a wonderful person in all aspects. My father and I enjoyed all of the time we spent with Joe watching Gloucester Catholic Baseball games from right field in Brooklawn. I hope all of your wonderful memories of him will carry you through this difficult time.

Joe was a terrific guy. He was my track coach and gym teacher at Gloucester Catholic. He epitomized Gloucester Catholic and never forgot it. It was always part of his life. Joe served as a model for many. He was always cheerful, upbeat and ready with a story. I was shocked by his passing. He seemed like he would go on forever because he was either walking the Bridge or working out and looked in better shape that a lot of his former students in their seventies, me included. I'll miss Joe at the many funerals where I used to see him. Always there to help give someone else a lift when they need it. My condolences to all the whole Murphy family. It will be a pleasure to see Joe again in Heaven, along with one of the great mentors in his life, Msgr Lucitt, who I'm sure was very proud of all he did for others, including the many guys he helped to get into college.

Very very sad news about a coach, mentor, and friend. Always upbeat, even when he would holler “take off those shoes mister when you’re walking on my gym floor.” Loved you Coach. RIP.

I always remember Mr. Murphy from my high school days. When we would get into mischief, he would correct us, but was cool about it so as not to get us into trouble with the priests and nuns.
He was genuinely a nice guy. Every boy in our class liked him. I'll keep "Murph" in my prayers.
